Around fifty vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.

Law enforcement say they were contacted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.

The fluid had been placed in the form of a swastika, they reported.

Police then discovered many other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.

Officials state initial examinations show the liquid was probably human blood.

"There is still no lead as to its source; authorities are not yet aware of any harm in relation with the incident," they added.

Local authorities stated they were trying "to solve the case" and have asked to the community for details.

A high-ranking official commented the vandalism rendered him without words and needed to be addressed rapidly.

"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist attack five years ago," he posted on a platform, mentioning the murder of nine people by a assailant aiming at individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
