British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of entry passages providing entry to the site... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their courage," he added. "Including them were a great many British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

In December, the US military carried out what it called a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
