Resurgent Medvedev Claims Maiden Title in Over Two Years

A resurgent Medvedev claimed his initial championship for over two years with a win over Frenchman Moutet in the competition title decider.

The athlete, a ex- world number one, has had a torrid year, achieving just a single victory at the big events and suffering a meltdown at the US Open.

His varied form on the professional circuit - and struggles with his service game in particular - led to him dropping out of the world's top 10 and ultimately parting ways with long-term coach Gilles Cervara.

Presently training with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, Medvedev has steadily progressed in the past month - culminating in a closely contested three-set victory over challenger Corentin Moutet.

This marks Medvedev's initial title following the 2023 Rome Masters and maiden on a hardcourt from that period of 2023.

The win also means Medvedev has achieved 21 titles at 21 different events.

"This marks the first occasion I'm at a tournament with my both daughters together, so to get a championship is really nice," commented tennis professional Daniil Medvedev.

"This victory is in dedication of my younger daughter my daughter, because the maiden victory I got when my older daughter my daughter was delivered was for her."

Medvedev, the past champion, had been defeated in his previous six title deciders, featuring in that event previously this season.

The player's counter-punching approach and frequent outbursts on the playing surface had led commentators to question if his ability to play at the elite level was over.

Yet the 29-year-old has altered his approach in recent weeks, attempting to approach the net and compete aggressively, supported by an enhanced service.

The champion came back from a deficit in the first set against the tricky Frenchman, winning 4 of the final five points to take the lead.

The competitors traded service breaks in the second set before Moutet, striving for his initial ATP Tour victory, took control to create a third set.

He defended 4 early-game opportunities in a tight deciding set before the Russian won the break to 15 to serve for the match.

Suitably, the winner earned victory with a point at the net, with the Frenchman unable to handle a shot after a lengthy match.
